On my blog post last month, I shared a poem I wrote a few years ago. Since I am in “poetry-mode” I thought I would share another poem I wrote. I don’t remember the exact date, but I think I wrote this poem when I was only 16 or 17 years old. I knew it was inspired by God since the words seemed to flow effortlessly off of my pen. I hope this poem is a great blessing to you.
“For Our Freedom”
There once was a young man that was drafted for war
He was scared to leave home, because he’d never left before
He told his family, “Goodbye,” and there he went
He left a warm, loving home, to go live in a tent
He wrote his family letters to tell them how much he missed them
He couldn’t wait until he could see them again
Days, then weeks, then months went by
It seemed all he could do was pray and cry
He could hear the blast of explosives nearby
In his mind he kept thinking, “I’m too young to die.”
All at once he heard the loudest sound
He was thrown into the air, then landed on the ground
The next thing he knew, he was in a hospital bed
He didn’t know whether he was alive or whether he was dead
As time passed by, he got to go home from the war
But he didn’t look the same as he did before
His body was maimed, and also scarred
For the rest of life, his body was marred
Why did this young man go risk his life?
It was for our freedom, yes for you and I
♥
But, there was another man that fought a war
His name is Jesus, and he fought even more
He told His Father, “Goodbye,” and there He went
He left the comfort of Heaven to come to this world where He was sent
He prayed to His Father, and told how much He loved Him
He couldn’t wait until He could see His Father again
Weeks, then months, then years went by
He knew He was on a mission for you and I
He could hear the footsteps of the soldiers nearby
In His mind He kept thinking, “I know I must die.”
All at once, He saw the three rusty nails
They were hammered in His hands and feet – the pain – more than He could tell
Next thing He knew, He was in a borrowed tomb
But that wasn’t the end; He knew His life would resume
As three more days passed by, He got to go home from this war
He knew that we would never be the same as before
Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin
That is why Jesus died, so we could be born again
Jesus went through such turmoil and disgrace
Just think about, He took our place
Why did Jesus come to give His life?
It was for our freedom, yes, for you and I
