I Don’t Believe In Atheists

on September 11, 2012

The title of this blog might sound like a brash, personal opinion – however, the Bible backs up this stance 100%. Before we delve into this topic, allow me to explain some different worldviews first. Pastor Mark Driscoll, formerly of Mars Hill Church, once narrowed the most common worldviews down to the following five categories:

1. Atheism= The belief that there is no God; a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being.

2. Deism = The belief that God made the world and left us. Basically, deism is the idea that there is no hero coming to save us.

3.Pantheism/Panentheism/Monism = The belief that everything is god and that god is in everything; he or she is what you want him or her to be. They believe that there is no Creator. Therefore the “god” they believe in is not the God of the Bible. They also believe that their god is not a person but just an energy or divine force which one can conjure up from within.  Furthermore, they believe everything is knitted together as one; even good and evil are one or the same. There’s no real right or wrong where they are concerned; they have very loose beliefs. Some famous people who believe this way are Oprah Winfrey, Deepak Chopra, Ekhart Tolle. This is a relatively new spirituality (a type of new age belief) based on old lies.

4.Theism = The belief that there is a God but no real Savior; the belief that you have to save yourself by religion. This is a works-based belief that your works alone or being “good enough” will somehow save you.

5. Christianity = This is the only belief that is based on 100% truth found in the inerrant Holy Bible. There is a Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. There is a Heaven and a Hell. There is only one Creator who eternally existed and Who has/will always exist. Because of our sin, creation was affected, stained and marred until Jesus gives us a new Heaven and a new Earth. Jesus came, born of a virgin, as the Savior. He came and identified with us and died for us. He willingly and lovingly died in our place (for our sins) and arose from death. He reconciles man to God. After He left earth, He left the Holy Spirit to comfort us and to guide us. He brings us hope. There is so much more to Christianity than a small paragraph could ever contain.

Driscoll goes on to say, “I don’t want you to interject Jesus into a false ideology.”  In other words, some religions interject just enough of God or Jesus in them to sound reasonable – but beware. Unless the belief system is based solely on The Holy Bible, it is false. Scripture says (in 2nd Timothy 3:5) in the last days people will “act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly [devoted to God]. Stay away from people like that!” Also, let us not add nor take away from God’s Word (see Deuteronomy 4:2).

Now that we have defined what atheism is, let me expound upon why I do not believe that anybody can be an atheist. Sure, thousands upon thousands of people claim to be atheists – but this does not negate what the Bible says. I understand that such people rebel and choose not to serve God, saying there is no God – but they know within themselves that there is a God. Pay close attention to the key scriptures below:

Key Scriptures

Romans 1:18-23 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.”

Romans 1:28-32 “And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.”

Romans 8:5-8 “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To focus our minds on the human nature leads to death, but to focus our minds on the Spirit leads to life and peace. That is why the mind that focuses on human nature is hostile toward God. It refuses to submit to the authority of God’s Law because it is powerless to do so. Indeed, those who are under the control of human nature cannot please God.”

The Unbelievers & Their Futile Reasoning

Sadly, many people view God as the problem rather than themselves. They will go to any measure to excuse their unbelief. But, we have all sinned and we are the problem! “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,” according to Romans 3:23. Some choose not to serve God because they think He is the one who enjoys watching suffering, war, starvation, disasters, and the like. Christian Missionary, Paul Washer, puts it like this:

“Some of you say, ‘I look out and I see all kinds of chaos… I see pain and suffering and futility.’ There’s an answer for that – Genesis chapter three. That God made man good, and God put man in a perfect world, but man disobeyed God. And when he fell, He took the entire world with him… God does not cry out to you about your sin just to make you feel horrible. [He cries out to you about your sin so you will] turn to Him!”

You see, the suffering in the world reminds us that we have sinned and that the wages of sin is death; but Jesus came to give us abundant life and to, one day, rescue us from suffering. So for now, even Christians must endure hardships just like the unbelievers. Scripture says that it rains on the just and the unjust alike – but the difference is that we have an amazing hope which the unbeliever does not have. We know that God will make it right for us and that we can live eternally with no pain, suffering, tears, torment, sickness, sin, or death. The original Paradise, as it were, will be ours throughout eternity. This gift is available to all who will accept Jesus. “For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal” 2nd Corinthians 4:17-18. We press on for the joy set before us.

I’ve heard it said that we are all cut from the same cloth. Had we been in Adam and Eve’s position, we would have willfully sinned too. You see, when mankind chose to sin in the beginning, God’s original perfect plan was temporarily placed “on hold.” We are now living in a world where Satan is the ruler of it since mankind chose evil, rebellion, and took Satan’s advice over God’s.  Of course, in this season when Satan rules the world there will be gut-wrenching catastrophes and sufferings. But, it is not going to last eternally for the Christian. People are confused and have misdirected anger toward God when it is Satan who relishes in evil. The Bible refers to Satan as: The god of this world, the ruler(s) of the darkness of this world (including demons), the prince of the power of the air, and the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience. “Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God” 2nd Corinthians 4:4.

Worldly Theories Unverified Scientifically

In the book of Genesis, the Bible speaks of how God created the universe. Many people nowadays challenge God’s Word and are branching out with their own doctrine – The Big Bang Theory. Such theories were collaborated with Charles Darwin’s idea of evolution in order to confuse the truth. The Big Bang Theory is designed to steer people away from God since the theory is obviously a scientific impossibility.

In May of 1992, American scientists announced the discovery of radiation patterns in space that may mark the beginning of time itself. The leader of the research team was astrophysicist George Smoot. Smoot won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006, among other accolades. After the discovery in 1992, Smoot said, “If you’re religious, it’s like looking at God. The order is so beautiful and the symmetry so beautiful that you think there is some design behind it. It is a mystical experience, like a religious experience. It really is like finding the driving mechanism for the universe, and isn’t that what God is?”

Basically, The Big Bang Theory proposes that billions of years ago there was a hot, dense point in space which expanded and created earth and space. A ministry focusing on the truth of Creation, Answer in Genesis Ministries (AIG), has stated, “Particle physicists claim that many magnetic monopoles should have been created in the high temperature conditions of the big bang. Since monopoles are stable, they should have lasted to this day. Yet, despite considerable search efforts, monopoles have not been found. Where are the monopoles? The fact that we don’t find any monopoles suggests that the universe never was that hot. This indicates that there never was a big bang, but it is perfectly consistent with the Bible’s account of creation, since the universe did not start infinitely hot.”

Science and the Bible are not enemies as many would believe; but we must also consider that God’s ways are higher than our ways and there may be things which are beyond mere man’s scope to understand or discover. There are many other man-made, worldly theories out there and I have only touched the tip of the iceberg on this topic. But in summation, anything contrary to God’s Word is bogus. It is important that we are not coerced by worldly viewpoints which have no spiritual or biblical backing. The Bible says in 1st John 4:5-6 the following: “Those people belong to this world, so they speak from the world’s viewpoint, and the world listens to them. But we belong to God, and those who know God listen to us. If they do not belong to God, they do not listen to us. That is how we know if someone has the Spirit of truth or the spirit of deception.”

Quotes

“When a man tells me he is an atheist, I have to make a choice – Do I believe him or do I believe the Bible? Because the Bible tells me he’s not an atheist. The Bible tells me that God has made Himself evident to him. God made us. We have the fingerprints of God all over us. You know the one true God; so why do you run? Why are you so apathetic toward Him? How could it be that He’s just a tiny, little, insignificant part of your life? It’s absolutely insane.” ~Paul Washer (Christian Missionary)

“So you ask then, why do they believe in Evolution? Because they don’t want a God as a creator. Because they know if they have a God as a creator then they know that there are a set of moral laws and they have to live by them or live under His judgment. So, the easiest way is to eliminate Him…they think.” ~John MacArthur (Pastor and Author)

“I would be an atheist too, if I had that much faith. It takes a lot of faith to believe all the order around us evolved from some gaseous belch in the universe six billion years ago. Order never comes from chaos unless somebody puts it together. If I took my watch totally apart and stuck the pieces in a sack and then I shook the sack for six billion years; after six billion years, what would be the chances of me pulling out a watch that is ticking and on time? I don’t even have enough faith for that – I certainly don’t have enough faith to think that this complicated universe around us came from chaos. And once you realize you don’t have enough faith to believe that there isn’t a God, you need to go on a hunt to find out who this God is. And you know what? For us to know God, He would have had to find us. In this great big universe, how are we going to find God? [You see,] He found us.” ~Mark Lowry (Christian Comedian and Singer)

“What is the ultimate solution to the origin of the Universe? The answers provided by the astronomers are disconcerting and remarkable. Most remarkable of all is the fact that in science, as in the Bible, the world begins with an act of creation.” ~Robert Jastrow (Astronomer)
